Brief Description: Wing Tips Modified for Landing Lights
In order to use the AeroLEDs AeroSun VX landing/Taxi lights, the wing tips need to be modified to provide increased space. This is done utilizing the LL-205 KIT-10/14 insert kit ordered along with the lights from Van's.
Following the installation instructions that came with the insert kit, marked and cut out the front outside section of the standard wing tips. Then after sanding away additional material to fit the inserts into the wing tips, drilled a #40 hole and inserted clecoes at the top seam and the front seam. With just these 2 clecoe, the insert did not fit tightly against the sides of the holes, so I drilled 2 more holes and installed 2 additional clecoes at the 2 bottom corners.
After completing the above for both wing tips, I used West System epoxy with fibers to glue up the right wing tip with insert. Painted both the outside flange of the insert and the inside of the wing tip and connected the insert into the wing tip with the 4 clecos (coated clecos with WD-40 as a release agent). Then placed 2 fiberglass strips inside to cover the insert flange and the adjoining inside of the wing tip.
The result was gaps between the insert and the wing tip in the center of the flanges. Will need to fill these after the epoxy cures.
