Brief Description:  Requested Assignment of N-Number

I learned from the DAR that reserving an N-Number is just the first step of the registration process. The next step is getting authorization to assign that number to a model of aircraft. That seems to be to give the manufacture a pool of numbers. In my case, I need just one. The final step is to register that number to a specific aircraft and owner. The final step is concurrent with issuing an airworthiness certificate.

I was surprised that the first step took a month. I went on-line, searched for vanity numbers and "reserved" one. I kept checking back for weeks and the number was still listed as available, even though the FAA had charged my credit card. Finally, after three weeks, it came off the available list, but still was not linked to me. A week later, I got a letter from the FAA committing it.

(This should be a fully computerized proces and happen instantly. But, with only a few thousand issued a year, it probably isn't a priority for the FAA - just through bodies at it....)

I thought I was done.

The DAR explained I needed the Assignment to assign it to my plane and that step could take another month to six weeks.

So, I drafted my letter, had him review it, and sent it off with yet another check.
