Brief Description:  Reaming and Reaming

The simple lines describing installation of the bell cranks is finally complete.

The weldaments needed to be reamed to size. But no reamer. Wait a week... Then the reamer was not quite big enough, but I kind of made do. The right wing system went in pretty cleanly and has almost no friction.

I wasn't so lucky with the left wing. I reamed the weldament and seemed to have a perfect fit until I torqued down the axle bolt. Then I had binding in some of the rotation. I pulled the assembly and reamed some more, but to no avail. It continued to bind when I torqued the assembly down. I certainly could overpower the binding with a few ounces of pressure, but it wasn't right. So off again. I got out the micrometer and found that the bushing was at fault - it was about 5 thousands over instead of under size. I had reamed enough that it worked until torqued. The torque seems to compress the bushing enough to expand its diameter.

I finally attacked from both directions: I chucked the bushing up and used some scotchbrite to take a few thousands off the diameter. I worked slowly to make sure I didn't over do it. Finally, I was able to torque the assembly down and have a nice tight fitting, but easy to turn, bearing.
