Brief Description:  Cabin Heat Muff and Routing

Fitting Van's heat muff on the Vetterman exhausts has proven difficult. Over the years, we have tried and walked away from a lot of positions. Somehow the hoses simply will not route.

Cameron and I took a fresh look at the problem over the course of a couple days and completely rethought the positioning. I had focus on putting the heat muff up close to the cylinder to harvest the hottest air. This is the configuration I think is most common, perhaps erroneously. Instead, we saw that there was a nice straight exhaust pipe at the aft crossover of the exhaust. This is conveniently near the heater air box. Routing one hose would be pretty easy.

The airbox I selected years ago has a connectoin orientation that is not optimal: the hose was exiting on a 45 degree angle to the starboard side where is should go down. Again, self-installed blinders were blocking the simple solutions, such as rotating the box 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

In the end, I ordered a stainless steel box with a horizontal run. I want to have the added safety of a contiguous firewall in the event it ever needed.

Another set of blinders were lifted when i asked my Tech Advisor, Tom Porta, about how to route the input air from the starboard air intake back to the muff. Tom said he just put his input duct on the right rear baffle. This removes about 2 feet of SCAT hose and saves a bit of work. securing bulky hoses.

We have a solid plan now, and all of the parts that we need.
