Brief Description:  Attaching and Adjusting Elevator

I mounted the elevators only to find that there is an interference between the HS skin and the elevator counter-weight. (See picture). I checked the plans a couple times and decided that the elevator had been built correctly and that the HS skin could/should be trimmed.

From there, I adjusted the travel of the elevator. The rear stop had already been riveted down. I tried to trim it in place but that didn't work very well. I ended up drilling out the rivets and removing the UP stop. The plans call out a 25-30 degree up limit. I set it at about 28 degrees. I tried to trim the rear HS spar to set the down limit. That actually worked pretty well, but I eventually decided to remove the HS anyway - I will need to have it removed to install servo wiring. I set the limit at about 24 degrees - within the 20-25 degree down elevator range.

I fabricated teh F866 rudder stops and prepped them for installation tomorrow.

The empennage is totally off the airplane. Tomorrow we put it back on, do initial rigging, then remove the empennage and move it to the hanger. We will route the servo wires before installing.

Taking things off is getting frustrating, but it is cool to have controll surfaces attacthed - I can visulize flying this thing.
