The flaps are positioned laterally referenced to the ailerons, so we had to temporarily and accurately mount the ailerons. So we started the day by making the bushings and bolt stack up to attach the ailerons. Getting the last little washer in between the aileron attach brackets required use of my electronic micro-tweezers, but went pretty well.
We were confused at reading the prints. I read them as requiring 1/4" between the skins of the wing and flaps. Yet it looked like the QB was built at 1/2 of that. We thought they screwed up and 1/4" was right. This also resulted in better trailing edge alignment. We decided to call Vans.
At 2 PM, we found that builder support is only 7-9 and 3:30 to 4:30 daily. We decided to wait.
Scott at Vans was very helpful. He agreed that we had read the print correctly and suggested a P5 hinge be used to move the flap aft as it belongs but still leave enough material to make a good structural connection. We are now waiting for the new hinge.
We did decide that we could rivet the stiffeners in the flap area, so we proceeded with dimpling, countersinking, deburring and priming.
We popped in about 1/2 of the required rivets before getting fatigued and frustrated with the hand puller. We decided to order a pneumatic. We had three bad pop rivets. We had pulled two with no damage, but decided to stop on the last before making a mistake.
