Brief Description:  Right & Left Upper Wing Paint

Plans:
1. Paint the left upper wing bottom.
Status: Complete. The bottom paint for the upper wings is now complete.
2. Add the white insignia field to the left upper wing.
Status: Complete. The cross pattee is surrounded with a field of white. This is similar to the bottom of the lower wings--this time on the top surface. Placement of this style cross is somewhat subjective. This type of insignia was used on the Dr1 triplane typically. The German military were instructed to place the crosses at the wing's midpoint. It is not clear if they included the center section wing to calculate the midpoint. I think they did based on photos. That said I did not go with the midpoint here. It is a little further out in my design. I wanted to make the crosses large like the Dr1's. The DR1 ailerons however extend closer to the root than the D7. To get a white border around the cross that bridges the ailerons I judged the crosses would need to be further out. In the end I decided my version would feature a 40" cross a foot further out than the center. Four coats of thinned paint were required.
Status: Complete.
3. Create a template for a large cross pattee. The cross pattee for the upper wing is larger than the lower wing. A new template was made using the same ratios. Outer dimensions are 40 inches. This takes the majority of space of the wing's cord while leaving a border. Again the Dr1 would have extended into the aileron as there was a larger section available.
