Brief Description:  Center Section

Plans:
1. Continue center section fabrication.
Status: Almost done. The surrounds for the center section have been installed and the wing mounted in place. As predicted access to the mounting nuts and bolts is difficult. In fact my approach to breaking down the aircraft for transportation and storage will change because of it. Previously I had imagined that when removing the center section I would leave the cabanes attached to the fuselage. Now the opposite is true. I will leave the cabanes attached to the center section and disconnect them at the fuselage. The fuselage bolts are extremely easy to access as compare to the wing area. Those bolts are buried inside the wing versus in the open. I also found that feeding four cabanes into the surrounds simultaneously is tricky at best sanding on a ladder.

I do think I will make some trim plates fastened with plate nuts to finish the surrounds closer to the cabanes. I am calling this almost done until I get that completed and the addition of some access holes for hardware. Otherwise it is ready for fabric.

On a separate note you can see in the photos that the surrounds in the rear float whereas the surrounds in the front bridge the ribs. In the unmodified AA design every other bottom rib is missing. Hence the surround would typically float on one or more ends. In my case (as I added the missing ribs) I decided to bridge the front surround across the ribs. I would have bridged both sets as opposed to letting them float had I sooner realized I could use the now nearby rib.
