Brief Description:  Install Brake Drums

Plans:

1. Install Brake Drums to Wheels

Status: Partial complete. I drilled out the five thru holes in the two inner moon covers. Prior to drilling I used the Tracy O’Brien brake hole pattern to check the fit. It was pretty close. When I installed the bolts--through the brake drum and cover into the threaded holes in the wheel hubs--they did not line up. There might be a slight offset in somebodies holes. Either the drum or the hub (the covers matched the drum). I did not want to open up the holes in the drums so I elected to enlarge the hub holes slightly. This means they are no longer threaded. They are now thru holes. The plan to have the lugs threaded into the hub is abandoned. The lugs will need to be secured in the hole with another nut on the outside surface. This was actually the original idea up to the point I found I could thread the hub holes. Oh well.

Unfortunately I noticed I will need to get taller spacers to support the cover. I also need longer bolts to pull it all together. Looks like a trip to Aircraft Spruce is needed to button up this job. And the torsion bars I just made are likely to short now. Oh well.

I will need to get the longer bolts before I can complete the assembly.

I elected to cut open the original torsion bar that I rejected to inspect the welds. The welds did not look that bad. Not perfect but not bad. I expect the newer parts are okay based on this sample.
