Brief Description:  Install Wheel Lugs

Plans:

1. Install wheel lugs and moon covers.

Status: Complete. I drilled out the five thru holes in the two outter moon covers. Prior to drilling I used the Tracy O’Brien brake hole pattern to check the fit. It was pretty close. When I installed bolts--through the brake drum and cover into the threaded holes in the wheel hubs--they did not line up. There might be a slight offset in somebodies holes. Either the drum or the hub (the covers matched the drum). I elected to enlarge the hub holes slightly. This means they are no longer threaded. They are now thru holes. The plan to have the lugs threaded into the hub is abandoned. The lugs will need to be secured in the hole with nuts on both inside and outside surfaces. This was actually the original idea up to the point I found I could thread the hub holes. Oh well.

The moon covers need permanent lugs mounted on the hubs. There is no access to the wheel internals with the covers installed. Five cover nuts are needed on the outside surface to secure it. I was concerned that the cover lugs might loosen over time thus making the cover nuts impossible to untighten. So I elected to create a custom lug using a set screw and nut. By red Loctiting the nut to the set screw I can now use an Allen wrench to hold the bolt still while I turn the outside nut (both from the outside cover surface).

In the photos you can see index markings in red. There is a preferred rotation of the cover onto the lugs for best hole alignment.

I also noticed that the 4 spun covers are all a little different. That is to be expected. The concentricity of the cover axel hole is imperfect to the bronze bearing. I might re-true the spun cover later to keep things centered.
