Brief Description:  Fuselage formers

For the afternoon, I focused on moving forward with the formers. I measured, cut, and cleaned up the end of the belly formers per the instructions. I used the .33" spacer at station C per the figure and the "CTL" for station D and E was under 1/4". With the formers in place on the tangs, I marked where to dril at each station. I was worried about getting the alignment right, but it worked out perfect. I marked each drill spot, removed the formers, and drilled on the drill press.

Lesson: Even the drill press tried to walk a bit on the 1/4" former. To prevent the bit from walking, I used a small nail and hammer to indent each drill hole before drilling. This gave the bit something to bite as soon as it touched the material. I also had to use the buffing attachment on the Dremel to buff each of the tangs for the former to fit on them

I also deburred all the #40 holes on the belly and side formers with the Burraway tool. Not sure this was necessary, but I did it anyways. The tool worked great. With all the holes drilled and spacers measured, I'm ready for final installation of all the side and belly formers. I'll do that as soon as the anti-chaff tape gets here.

lastly, I contacted RANS about he forward end of the top former and the vertical stabilizer rib. The weld that secures the tab aft of station 3 keeps me from getting the top former flush on the tab. That's after doing the modification per the parts manual and instructions. Photo below of the front of the former where I tried to drill it and only left 1/16" of material between the drill hole and the end of the former.

The vertical stabilizer rib does not rest flush on the tabs due to the weld that holds the tabs on the vertical stabilizer cross brace. I think I'm supposed to trim out pieces of the rib to fit over the welds, but I'm not doing that kind of craziness without talking to someone smarter than me. Almost everyone is smarter than me. I mean RANS.
