Brief Description: Preparing the stabilator spar box
Preparing the stabilator spar box. This consists of spar caps, spar ribs, and forward and rear spars with some other little pieces (doublers, etc). Part of the assembly includes powdercoated pieces such as the counterweight arm (intended for reducing control pressures, i.e. making it easier for the pilot to move the stabilator up and down.) This task involved a lot of countersinking parts and then riveting with conventional rivets.
I have screwed up this assembly twice and may yet a third. The first two were simply misaligning the parts. The first time I had the spar caps reversed (one facing one way, one the other). The second time I had all the spar ribs upside down. Of course I had fully riveted the assembly both times. The good news is I'm getting very good at drilling out rivets.
