Brief Description:  AP/IA Inspection

My new friend and hopefully advisor Bernie found time in his schedule to come over tonight to view and examine my work. Bernie is an AP/IA, He has worked for several Airlines in a Maintainence Management position and is very knowledgeable on GA aircraft. He ownes two A/C himself and while he is not, now, a Tech Coun. for EAA he is going to be looking into becoming one. I met him through another AP/IA friend. He looked at my Right Wing, currently "on the table" and ready to have the bottom skin attached with rivets. He carefully looked over the Spar's and Rib assembly and feels that he would be more comfortable if I replaced the "pulled rivets" in the middle splice joint of the rear spar with "dirven rivets" These can be set with my "C-frame" and I have the correct size. A simple job and I will do so before proceeding further. His reason for this is the fact the the spars are stressed in shear load and driven rivets are simply stronger. I'll also do the same to the doubler on the inside end of the rear spar. He was happy with everything else and had no suggestions, requests, or changes he felt should be made on my work at this stage. Bernie also looked at my Hor Stab and Elevator - which I informed him I intend to trash and build again because I am not happy with the edge clearance I ended up with on the hinge connecting the two. I think I'm going to try to move to a 2" hinge width on the rebuild instead of the 1 1/2" if it's available. My holes are dead on in the flange of the skin and spar in both cases but too close to the edge on the hinge. He agreed with my thinking and advised he'd ask me to do that had I not already decided to do so. I felt pretty darn good when he left about my work so far.
I felt pretty good when he left about my efforts so far and my own views on my work.
