Brief Description:  Continued assembling wingtip. Cleco/rivet pictures

Got into the shop for a little while this morning before going to the airport. Clecoed the aft wingtip rib in place, and fluted the foward rib to shape and clecoed. Bent the tabs on the wingtip closeout skin and clecoed into place.

Some have asked about clecos and rivets. I will take this opportunity to explain. The first picture shows a rivet at the top, and a cleco at the bottom. The cleco is inserted into a rivet hole to hold the pieces tighly together, temporarily, as shown in picture two. They are inserted with a special tool, usually every second or third hole. Then the rivets are inserted into the open holes, and "pulled." In non-aviation terms these are called "pop" rivets. The stem is pulled through the rivet itself compressing and expanding it to create a permanent fastener. Picture 3 shows rivets before and after pulling. The ones on the top show the "shop" head, the ones on the right in the verticle plane show what the "factory" heads look like after pulling.

There are other kinds of rivets used in the RV-12, but this is the predominate type, and there are about 12,000 of them holding the plane together. Without the rivets the plane is just a pile of loose parts!
