Brief Description:  Continued on right wing skins.

Didn't work on the plane over the weekend. Carolyn and I gathered, split, and stacked more firewood near the shop. May seem unrelated, but it sure will be important to the project when I am working on the finish kit next winter!

Today my flying was cancelled due to a nasty storm that is bringing us rain and a lot of wind. That means I got a lot of time in the shop. Clecoed and then riveted the overhanging sections of the bottom skins. Then clecoed and riveted the two flaperon hinge brackets into the wing assembly. By way of explanation to my non-aviation friends, a "flaperon" is a combination of flaps and ailerons. Van's has designed this airplane to combine the functions into one control surface on the trailing edge of each wing. There is some ingenious mechanical linkage in the fuselage that causes both surfaces to deflect downward for the conventional flap function, and also allows for asymetrical deflection for roll control, as commanded by the control stick. At any rate, the hinge brackets are where the flaperons are attached to the wings, so it is an important area. Image 1 is a picture of the hinge mounting structure. 23 rivets in all - this structure is definitely in there to stay!

Next I deburred and clecoed in place the inboard and outboard top wing skins. Then I deburred the middle wing skin and the wing step doubler, masked off the wing and roughed it up with ScotchBrite, and primed the top of the wing skin and the bottom of the doubler, as well as the mating surfaces of the middle skin. Image 2 shows the primed area on the top of the wing skin.

Next work session I will assemble and rivet all the remaining wing skins and the doubler, and begin work on the wingtip.
