Brief Description:  Reposition Cabin / Tube Seal Tail Boom / Transfer

Reposition Cabin / Tube Seal Tail Boom / Transfer Tail from Hanger / Install Tail Boom / Mount Mid-Boom Beacon Light / Install Aft Nav Light

My plan was to move the helicopter cabin to the hanger so I could install the tail and continue with a number of other tasks. The weather, however, had other ideas and it was dumping the heaviest rain I have seen in years. I’m not worried about the tail getting wet, but the cabin doesn’t have a bubble or doors installed yet, so everything is exposed to the weather, and the ship is not ready to get wet. Rather than stop construction, I measured the garage shop carefully, and if I spun the cabin to face the main door and angled the ship from corner to corner in the shop, it looed like the tail could just barely fit once installed. This helps in many ways, mainly that I would have all the tools and hardware I need at my disposal, and I’m much more likely to spend long hours on it if I’m only steps away from my bed.

I slipped my heavy automotive casters under the front landing gear struts, and got the back of the helicopter up on its skid wheels. This let me achieve very flexible movement of the cabin within a very small space. I rearranged the garage to allow for the movement, and relocated the cabin so it was facing the opposite way. Once in place with the most clearance possible behind it, I brought it back down from its wheels because the next step in the boom installation and mating process is leveling the cabin.

I headed to the airport and loaded the tail into the back of my truck and installed the boom taillights upside down since the tail would be resting on it’s back in the bed. Before doing so, however, I added the remainder of the tube treatment that I used in the main frame to protect against corrosion. I opened the can about a year ago when I treated the cabin frame, and since then it seems to have gotten a bit dried up. I ordered more and I plan to add a little more to the boom and cabin just to be extra sure that I’m protected. I will have to t
