Brief Description: Elev: Mounting and aligning elevators to H-Stab
I worked on and off during the day as time allowed but ultimately managed to fit and align the elevators to the horizontal stab.
I started by screwing the rod end bearings into the elevator spars to the maximim distance as called out on the plans (7/8" from spar web to center of the bearng hole). I then fitted the elevators by "squeezing" the counterweight skin in between the tabs on the H-stab skin. Unable to heck the travel at the moment because of the H-stab skin, I measured the gap between the counterweight skin and the H-Stab skin. I repeatedly removed, adjusted the rod-end bearings (only screwing them in further as I already started at max distance) and remounted the elevators until the between the H-Stab skin and the counterbalance skin measured equally along it's entire length.
I took that to mean that the elevators were then perfectly aligned and then marked the area on the outboard tabs of the H-stab skin that need to e trimmed away. I trimmed these away using a dremel tool with a cut-off wheel and the rounded of the corners nicely with a circular grinding stone and the deburred and smoothed it al appropriately.
I then cut the flange on the lower end of the rear H-Stab spar as directed to make place for the elecator horns such that there is adequate downward elevator deflection. There is still minor cleanup to do here but I was unfortunately not able to complete that today - will continue tomorrow.
