Brief Description:  Bending Brake - Rebuild

Unfortunately, the previous bending brake I built got "rendered unusable" by the builders last year. I had to rebuild it but was only planning on doing so when the ailerons/flaps came along again. That was 'till a friend and second time offender phoned asking to borrow the bending brake as he needed the bend the trailing edge on his new project's elevators.

I had a look to see if I had suitable material lying in the garage. I settled on two fairly large pieces of supawood which I glued together and then screwed together with some countersunk screws for good measure. I left the glue to dry and, when ready, I cut the board in half lengthwise to form either side of the bending brake. I lopped about 9cm's of each end of one piece so that the top peice could overlap the bottom and provide purchase during the bend.

I removed the hinges from the old bending brake (still serviceable), positioned and drilled them into place. When all was said and done, there was about 1/8" gap at the business end of the brake (i.e. between to the pieces of wood at the hinges).

I hopped in my car and went over to my friends house, bending break in hand. We proceeded to bend the elevators (or rather "that which was left"! ;) ). Seems I had made the gap too big so we decreased it marginally and rebent. Still not 100% but adequate - rest can be finished with handseamers.

When I got home, I disassembled it and rebuilt it using #40 drill bits to set the gap. I think this will work much better - time will tell!
