Brief Description: R-HS & R Elev: Balancing, priming and more floxing
I started by balancing the R-Elevator (ever so slightly "nose" heavy) by removing a fair amount of leadfrom the rear of the counterweight and a little from the front of it (primariliy a shaping excersize on the front). On the front a rounded the corners more o creat more of a gap between the counter weight and the tip. This would allow me to strengthen the elevator tip face with a flox gusset on the inside.
To remove the lead from the back of the balanace, I used a dremel tool with a large rotary wood carving bit set 15000 RPM. It made very short work of the lead and I then cleaned it up with a file - it finished off fairly well I think.
I wet sanded the tips with a 400 grit paper until they were as smooth as glass (or so I thought). I then sprayed the respective tips with a rattle can grey primer very lightly - pin holes everywhere - especially where ever I had removed the gel coat and it hadn't been covered by epoxy again.
I recovered the wegiht with box tape and then mixed up a batch of flox and placed all it over the inside of the elevator tip's front face (basically wherever the tip was in close proximity to the counterweight). I then clecoed the tip into position so that the still wet flox got forced into shape up against the glass tip by the counterweight. Will leave that to cure.
