Brief Description:  Drilling the VS bottom bracket - Part 1

OK so you need to drill the two AN3 bolts to 1/4". I started this with a #40 pilot hole. But as you can see I aligned this perfectly n the Y-axis. But paying so much atttention to this completely screwed up the X-axis.

On the forward side of the WD-409 tailspring, the edge distance is not so good. Steel part.

I therefroe went to Vans for advise.

I have come to Drawing 27 and putting the two bolts into the VS-410PP through the VS Rear Spar and into the WD-409 tail spring mount. These are the two sets of AN4-6A Bolts.

We have measured very carefully to ensure these holes are located accurately. We then progressed to make a #40 pilot hole. Taking care with the alignment (1 dimension only - y) I have found the hole is not aligned well in the other dimension – x. This is the problem.

As a result the hole protrudes on the forward face of the WD-409 very close to the flange. What do you advise to do?

I appreciate you advice. Should I drill a new pilot towards the centre line of the existing hole. Should I repair? Other?

It seems thta both my local technical counsellor and Vans are not so concerned about this and advise to carefully make a new hole - 1 centered on the original hole on the aft side and adjacent to the original hole on the forward side. Hoe to do this is the challanege. Thinking about this now and will report in the next log.
