After looking at VAF, talking to other builders, and evaluating the strength of a thin nut I decided the best course of action was to remove material from the flange of the weldment to allow the specified hardware to be used.
I used a die grinder with a diamond tip to slowly remove material. Once removed I prepped and painted the surface to protect it.
